The International Journal of Feminist Approaches to Bioethics (IJFAB) provides a forum within bioethics for feminist thought and debate. Sponsored by the International Network on Feminist Approaches to Bioethics, IJFAB includes feminist scholarship on ethical issues related to health, health care, and the biomedical sciences. It aims to demonstrate clearly the necessity and distinctive contributions of feminist scholarship to bioethics and is multidisciplinary and international and is committed to sustaining and expanding the network of scholars in feminist bioethics and exploring how gender intersects with other social determinants of privilege and discrimination.

Vroeger had je pech wanneer je geen kinderen kon krijgen, maar tegenwoordig staat mensen met een onvervulde kinderwens een heel scala aan behandelmogelijkheden ter beschikking. Toch krijgt niet iedereen die dat wil zomaar toegang tot IVF, ICSI en aanverwante technieken. Met een beroep op het belang van het toekomstige kind sluiten artsen bepaalde groepen van behandeling uit, waaronder vrouwen boven een bepaalde leeftijd, alleenstaande vrouwen en paren van wie de kinderen het risico lopen op een ernstige genetische aandoening. Daarnaast is de vraag: wie zal dat betalen? Moeten de kosten van bijvoorbeeld een IVF-behandeling standaard door de zorgverzekeraar worden vergoed? En geldt dat ook nog als de onvruchtbaarheid te maken heeft met de levensstijl van de betrokkenen (roken, overgewicht), of het gevolg is van een eerdere, zelfgekozen sterilisatie?In 'Een hoge prijs voor een kind' wordt verslag gedaan van de opvattingen over deze kwesties van artsen en andere deskundigen alsook van de Nederlandse bevolking. Deze opvattingen worden bovendien aan een ethische en juridische analyse onderworpen. Zo biedt deze uitgave een goed overzicht van het actuele debat rond vruchtbaarheidsproblematiek en reproductieve technieken in Nederland.
